A Rich Variety of Treasures
The 2022 list features an array of categories, each leading its respective domain: porcelain, imperial seals, Ming and Qing dynasty furniture, coins, Buddha statues, and scholar's objects. This rich variety is a testament to the diversifying aesthetics and value orientations of collectors. Smaller sub-categories within the antique treasures have gained more attention, making the market more dynamic and inclusive.
Porcelain: The Timeless Centerpiece
Porcelain continues to dominate the antiques category, particularly pieces from the Qing Dynasty. The top porcelain items of 2022 include the Qing Dynasty Qianlong Emperor's Yangcai porcelain vase with a purple and red brocade design, a Qianlong powder blue glazed vase with a carved sea-dragon design, and a Yuan Dynasty blue and white large jar with fish and algae patterns.
Qianlong Porcelain: Renowned for its superb craftsmanship and variety, Qianlong porcelain integrates traditional Chinese essence with Western artistic techniques. This fusion results in exceptionally beautiful and highly sought-after pieces. The "ancient bronze colors" innovation is a prime example of this exquisite artistry. These pieces not only retain traditional Chinese essence but also integrate Western artistic techniques, making them exceptionally beautiful and popular in the market.
Yuan Dynasty Porcelain: Yuan Dynasty blue and white porcelain is exceedingly rare, with only about 300 to 400 complete pieces recognized globally. This scarcity makes it a highly discussed and coveted category among collectors.
Imperial Seals: Symbols of Authority
Imperial seals are supreme symbols of emperorship and authority. The Qing Dynasty, particularly under Emperor Qianlong, produced an array of seals, with over 1,800 seals estimated. Of these, 609 were carved from Shoushan stone, marking significant personal milestones of the emperor. The auction market has seen significant excitement over the past decade whenever Qianlong's Shoushan stone seals were offered, with some achieving sales in excess of one hundred million yuan.
Ming and Qing Dynasty Furniture: Risk-Resistant Investments
The market for Ming and Qing dynasty furniture has been particularly hot this year, with three furniture items making the top 10 list. The primary reason is their risk-resistant nature. Ming and Qing furniture places a high value on materials, typically using huanghuali or zitan wood, whose worth is widely recognized and has good liquidity internationally. Even amidst broader economic impacts, well-provenanced and orderly passed down Ming and Qing furniture remains sought after by collectors.
Buddhist Art: A Continuously Rising Market
The market for Buddhist art has continuously reached new heights and has become a standard feature in major auction houses' spring and autumn sales. Buddhism has been part of Chinese culture since the Han Dynasty, and Buddha statues are highly valued for their long history, vivid imagery, and exquisite craftsmanship. This year, an 11th-century gilt bronze statue of the Bodhisattva Avalokiteshvara from the Dali Kingdom fetched an impressive price, showcasing the enduring appeal of Buddhist art.
Ancient Coins: A Unique Historical Wealth
Ancient coins have a broad market base within the antique collectibles. Coins from various Chinese dynasties contain a rich tapestry of political, economic, cultural, and artistic history, making them a unique and unparalleled wealth in the history of global currency. This year, a 1903 Kuang Hsu Yuan Bao silver coin from the Guangxu era was a notable highlight, reflecting the historical and cultural significance of ancient Chinese currency.
