Discover how Zhang Daqian dominated the Chinese painting and calligraphy market in 2022, leading the transaction volume and setting records with his exquisite artworks.
Zhang Daqian remains a dominant figure in the Chinese painting and calligraphy market, achieving unparalleled success in 2022. With an annual turnover exceeding RMB 1 billion, Zhang Daqian secured the top spot in the "2022 Annual Transaction Volume Top 10 for Chinese Painting and Calligraphy Artists," more than doubling the sales volume of Qi Baishi, who ranked second.
Zhang Daqian's work "Landscape after Wang Ximeng" set a new record by selling for HKD 370 million (approximately RMB 304.338 million), the highest single-item transaction price in all art categories for 2022. This hooked-brush blue-green landscape was highly regarded by Zhang Daqian and listed as not for sale at a 1948 Shanghai art exhibition. The piece later belonged to Shanghai collector Sun Zhifei and was loaned to the Shanghai Museum and the National Art Museum of China in 1983. Since then, it had not been shown publicly and was passed down within the family.
Zhang Daqian's versatility and mastery in both meticulous and freehand styles, landscapes, figures, and birds and flowers have solidified his place in the art market. His splash-ink landscapes are particularly popular and dominate the market. However, his record-breaking piece this year was a hooked-brush blue-green landscape, showcasing his diverse artistic skills.
Zhang Daqian's market foundation is solid, with notable collectors such as Wu Hufan and international collectors acquiring his works as early as the 1950s and 60s. In 1963, Zhang's large six-panel lotus painting was bought by Reader's Digest for $140,000, setting a record price for Chinese paintings at that time. The influence of collectors like Lin Baili, who is behind several high-priced auctions of Zhang's works, plays a significant role in the market for the artist's works. Their steady purchasing, holding, and orderly release provide more exposure and market opportunities for Zhang Daqian.
